Why Ed Rocks

I’m talking about Ed Schipul of course. Who is my mentor and friend. But more importantly he’s one of only 3 people in my life who give it to me straight. The Good, The Bad, and The Awful. And trust me – I can be awful sometimes. Tonight Ed reminded me that manners are important – no matter who you are – or who you think you are. And that Loyalty and True Friendship is worth more than an entire Aztec City filled with Gold. Honest.

Hanging with Matt, Glenda & Chris

One of Houston’s “Web 2.0″ Claims to Fame is that we gave birth to WordPress. I bet you thought it was San Francisco right? This is cool for 2 reasons – 1. It makes Houston look super tech savvy & cool. 2. When Matt comes to town – we all get to go hang out with him and eat Raw Steaks at IHOP at 2 in the morning (Not to be confused with 4 in the morning).

Tonight after having drinks at Rioja with Ed, Rachel, Glenda, Matt, & Chris – all of us except Ed and Rachel headed over to IHOP where we recorded this little gem.

I love driving into Austin on a Sunny Saturday morning – it makes me feel alive. Today I’m on my way to the UT Student Union for Idea to Product Global. What is Idea to Product Global?

Idea to Product Global

From their website:

The Idea to Product® Competitions, founded at The University of Texas at Austin, are early-stage technology commercialization plan competitions that aim for unique product ideas with clear market demand that use innovative technologies. The goal is educating and developing the next generation of technology entrepreneurs. The program is particularly interested in matching technologies resulting from a university’s fundamental research programs with potential markets.

I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from the competition – but I’m definitely glad that I went. I met a ton of amazing folks from the Science Sector including: Dr. Michael S. McCorquodale and his lovely wife Ruba – and Michael Callahan. And I had the extreme pleasure of interview them all for The Business Makers Radio Show. Tune in this Saturday on to Talk Radio – KPRC AM 950 – or visit http://thebusinessmakers.com/

Michael Callahan

The winning team on Saturday was awarded $10,000 and the chance to compete at another business competition in the near future. I sat down with the man behind that team for a brief interview about his product: Ambient. Let me just say that this is one smart guy. One of the things I’ve noticed over the last few months is that Entrepreneurs (at least the great ones) have a lot in common with one another. Chatting with Michael Callahan, reminded me of chatting with another up and coming Rock Star of Business named Matt Mullenweg. Like Matt, Michael understands what it means to be truly passionate and committed – and that makes him remarkable.

People start businesses all the time – most with the best of intentions. But what sets a good business apart from a REMARKABLE business really comes down to 4 factors:

Vision

Focus

Passion

Tenacity

But just in case you are clueless on this one — Matt is the founding developer of WordPress — and CBBQTT for San Francisco Based Automattic. But mostly he’s just one heck of a cool guy.

Also — if we’re lucky — The one and only Andy Skelton (developer of the Best Coffee Vodka in the World!) — will be joining us this Monday as well. <-- This is my sad attempt to get Andy to Houston so that I can hang out with him. Seems like I never get to see as much of him as I would like

Additionally, I just learned that Paul Stamatiou is home from Georgia Tech for Spring Break — and will be joining us for this little get together at the Stag’s Head pub. All we’re missing now is a little Gio from Big “D”.
