How Meditation Helped Me Let Go of Perfection

Meditation

A Happy Accident.

When I first decided on my goals for week one of ReinventingErica.com I had no idea that learning to meditate would teach me everything I needed to know about letting go of perfection.

First let’s explore Meditation.

For years I’ve heard about the amazing benefits of Meditation including improved health, greater creativity, reduced stress and increased clarity – but until this week I’d never practiced any form of Meditation.  There are countless ways to meditate – and I encourage you to seek out the method that best suits your life.  For those of you just getting started I recommend taking a look at Transcendental Meditation, or any number of Buddhist Meditation Techniques.  I also recommend reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love.  – The book that inspired me to begin my own meditation practice.

In When Things Fall Apart, Pema Chodron says that:

“Meditation is an invitation to notice when we reach our limit and to not get carried away by hope and fear.  Through meditation, we’re able to see clearly what’s going on with our thoughts and emotions, and we can also let them go.  What’s encouraging about meditation is that even if we shut down, we can no longer shut down to ignorance.  We see very clearly that we’re closing off.  That in itself begins to illuminate the darkness of ignorance.  We’re able to see how we run and hide and keep ourselves busy so that we never have to let our hearts be penetrated.  And we’re also able to see how we could open and relax.”

The Key to Personal & Business Success?

According to The Change Blog, most successful people Meditate, use Affirmations or Visualizations.  Research suggests that these habits work because they reprogram how you think – and more importantly how you see yourself.  The biggest benefit I get from meditation is an increased awareness of my own strengths and weaknesses.

By nature I’m a perfectionist.  Through meditation I’ve been learning to concentrate more on Progress then Perfection.  What has meditation taught you?
