Rock The Vote — An Experiment in The Power of Social Media

You Nominated Me For What???

When Kelsey first told me he had nominated ReinventingErica.com for A Blogger’s Choice Award for Best Geek Blog, I thought he was nuts. Who in the world would vote for my blog? Let’s face it — I really don’t blog that consistently. And while I do occasionally have a profound thought or two — I’m probably not all that feed worthy.

Kelsey nominated me just to help my rankings in Google (I’m currently #7 for the term “erica” — hoping to be #1 some day). We never thought people would actually vote — and never in a million years did we think that we would make it to the #4 spot (just below blogs like Boing-Boing and Lifehacker). But we have. And that inspired us to conduct a little experiment into the Power of Social Media.

How Powerful is Social Media For The Average Person?

We’ve decided to use this opportunity as a chance to test different social networks — and find out what works and what doesn’t. We’ll be documenting our efforts over the next few weeks, including who’s voting, how they learned about the competition, who’s blogging about it, and why — and whether they voted because they were personally contacted by one of us either online or in person — or because they saw a link on one of the Social Networking sites/Blogs. We’ll also compare the effects of off-line versus online communities. Are people more likely to vote if they meet us and talk to us face to face? Or is a video introduction or twitter link more effective?

We’ll be targeting networks like Twitter, VIRB, MySpace, YouTube, Viddler, Delicious, Flickr, Meetup, DIGG, and more. We’ll also be asking people to blog about it, and finally we’ll be talking about it at local community events such as Refresh, CSS Meetup, Netsquared, and more.

Christine and Greg our partners from The Method Agency will also be helping us get the word out. If you’d like to help us, feel free to blog about our efforts, or encourage your friends to vote.

If you have already voted, please feel free to leave a comment below telling us how you learned about the competition and why you decided to vote.

    Found you this way…

Read an article on Fark.com bout Wil Wheaton’s blog competing with Rosie O’Donnell’s blog for “Best Celebrity Blogger”

Signed up to vote for Wil.

Noticed that his blog had also been nominated in other categories. Decided to vote for him in the other categories as well.

When I got to the other categories, I decided to look before voting.

Now, you get my vote in the “Best Geek Blog” category - because you seem to have a more personal experience.

Now, get over to Fark.com - but be warned, it isn’t for the faint hearted.

I was at the site because of some feed in Google Reader. I was exploring…looking for new sites that may interest me and I came across the Best Geek Blog category, which is why I’m here. So far, I’m like the site. It’s late for me though 1am and I have classes tomorrow. I’ve bookmarked this site and I’ll be taking a look around tomorrow or Friday. Good luck!

Also found out about this site through Blogger’s Choice Awards, which I found out about through one of my Google Reader feeds. Don’t remember which one though. Your site is nice and I’ve bookmarked it to check it out some more later this week. Good luck.

I Have Blogger's Block
I was chatting with my friend Laura Mayes tonight - explaining how I have Blogger’s Block.  Tomorrow I head to San Francisco - and I’ve already stocked up on awesome reading materials for the plane - including the Complete Works of Jane Austen and Katharine Hepburn’s Autobiography.  Laura’s advice:

The best way to get out of a block is to read good writing.

And to go to Northern California.

Check. And Check.

Link Policy

My personal link policy is as follows - I only link to the blogs of people I actually know in real life (with the exception of the "Other Erica's" section). I think when you add someone to your blogroll there should be real meaning attached. Most of the people I link to are not only acquaintances - but folks I am lucky enough to call my friends.
