K2 + WordPress + Widgets…the perfect CMS?

October 29th, 2006  |  Published in Misc.

I know I’m kinda behind the bandwagon on this one…but I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with the perfect solution for the NYPS rebrand. I want…no I need for this redesign to be on some sort of CMS. It needs to be flexible, simple to update, funtional, and beautiful to look at. I’ve used Kubrick as a base in the past…but now I think it’s definitely time to jump to K2.

So…how do I take my wireframes & design comps and move them into the K2 framework? I came across one of Paul’s old tutorials on Customizing K2, and thought that would definitely be a great starting point.

To get a better idea of what I am dealing with, here are the initial wireframes for NYPS rebrand, redesign, realign…whatever you want to call it.

I’m working on the design comps right now. I think this will be the perfect opportunity to test the power of WordPress (and their nifty new Widgets), as a CMS for an organization that will have several people editing different sections of the site on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. It is also a good opportunity to test the flexibility of K2.

In the past I’ve used Joomla for such projects…but in this case I wanted a more elegant solution. Something with less features, but more extensibility. I think part of what makes WordPress great as a CMS is that you don’t have to spend half a day turning off the features you don’t need. It gives you just enough…and nothing more. If you want extras…well there are a multitude of plug-in repositories. I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

I Have Blogger's Block
I was chatting with my friend Laura Mayes tonight - explaining how I have Blogger’s Block.  Tomorrow I head to San Francisco - and I’ve already stocked up on awesome reading materials for the plane - including the Complete Works of Jane Austen and Katharine Hepburn’s Autobiography.  Laura’s advice:

The best way to get out of a block is to read good writing.

And to go to Northern California.

Check. And Check.

My personal link policy is as follows - I only link to the blogs of people I actually know in real life (with the exception of the "Other Erica's" section).
