Dodgeball Makes It To Houston

That’s right folks…Dodgeball has made it’s way to our fair city.
It’s interesting really, because I was having a conversation with Matt & Andy at BarCampTexas about this very subject. I said that Dodgeball was a silly service that would never take off. My words were met with laughter and ridicule…okay…not actual ridicule…but they did correct me. They said that Dodgeball is the way all formal and informal gatherings are now planned in San Francisco (it’s also big in New York). In many circles, Dodgeball has taken the place of e-mail, phone calls, and traditional text messaging. It’s how the “Cool Kids” meet-up.
Well…Dodgeball is FINALLY here. In fact, it was because of Dodgeball that I met up with Kelsey the other night for dinner. The way Dodgeball works, is you send out an SMS message to “DODGE” letting the system know where you currently are. I call this “The Check-in”. This message is then broadcast to all of the people on your buddy list. They receive a message that says something like: “Erica is at Little Italy (9511 Westheimer Rd). Why not stop by and say Hi?” It’s really an amazing service.
So, the other night at around 9PM, I was driving home from my favorite coffee house when Kelsey, Ron, and Lori checked in at Rioja. It was close to where I was, so I stopped by to hang out. And, now it’s my favorite restaurant.
Drawbacks. Well it is a little intrusive…but you can always text the word “Off” to “Dodge” to sign-off for the evening. And, you only have to check-in when you want your friends to know where you are.
Ed won’t be my friend, because he says he’s “not ready to be THAT connected yet”.
